1972 Porsche 914

Disassembly - Part 3 - Engine and Transmission

6/24/2005 - 6/25/2005

Getting ready to work on removing the engine and transmission.  I removed the exhaust and shift linkage.  Didn't get any photos of the linkage.  Need to do that before I pack it away.  Had two exhaust studs back out of the head.  I don't think I have ever taken the exhaust off without an exhaust stud backing out.  Nuts were not copper, so that might be the problem.  I did get some photos of the engine bay and under the car prior to starting.

Note the small Weber carbs.

Engine lid latch and trunk light.

Hinges are toast.

Hell hole.  Needs work, but doesn't look that bad.

This is the area that I would like to put in an external oil cooler with a thermostatically controlled fan.  Ducting to get cooler air (since this is downstream from the engine) would be nice.  Need to find a slick way to do all of this.  Preferably without having to weld any tabs to the body.  Would like it to be a complete bolt on proposition with no welding or cutting.

Did some work on getting the engine and transmission out.  I really wanted it done prior to my birthday (today) as I have had the car roughly a year.  Actually I had wanted to get the car totally stripped during that time period.  Had to stop as I ran out of time.

Engine and transmission are out of the car now.  I had to jack it up a bit more as well as remove the rear suspension to get it out.  I think if the car was higher I wouldn't have had to remove the rear suspension.  I have done this a number of times without doing that, but it has been about 10-15 years ago .  No problems otherwise.

Some photos after everything is out...

Documenting some stuff that was pulled out the other day.  Rear transmission mounts.  Photos...
