1972 Porsche 914Disassembly - Part 1 - Rear Bumper9/4/2006Removed the rear bumper today. I would have done this earlier as I had been planning on doing the work from the rear forward. So in a way, this should have been the first thing to come off. But since I have been doing most of the work at night with the garage door down and with the car to close to the door, it has been hard to work on the rear. I had been wondering if my car's original bumpers were color keyed to the body color or chrome. I have not sent off for my Porsche Certificate of Authenticity yet, but so far the evidence is that this was a base 1972 model. So that meant no vinyl on Targa sails as well as no chrome bumper. So early cars were supposed to have a color keyed bumper (same color as car). But since most if not all promotional photos that you see in any 914 books show cars with most of the options installed, I have yet to see a period (factory photo) of a 914 with non-black (later models) or chrome bumpers. I have seen a few more recent photos, but it is hard to know if that car has it's original color scheme or not. So when the rear bumper came off, I found that the inside was painted green (bumper painted prior to being put on car) as well as green paint under the black. So I believe that one of the previous owners repainted the green bumpers black. I didn't take any photos of the bumper today. But I plan to do so before I put the hardware away. I did notice that I was missing one of the four bolts for the bumper and one of the "dog bones" two stacked rubber pieces (split?) while the other was a one piece unit. 9/8/2006Documenting items pulled off on 9/4/2006.
